Dorn discusses differing student and administrator attitudes toward civic engagement and concepts of the "common good" at Bowdoin College and Stanford University during the 1800s. His comments are part of a paper "From 'Liberal Professions' to 'Lucrative Professions': Bowdoin College, Stanford University, and the Civic Functions of Higher Education."
