Hammer Time: John Pietro '18 Walks Early to Throw in NCAA Track & Field Championship This Weekend

John Pietro ’18 gets his diploma and handshake from President Clayton Rose a little early to allow him to travel to the NCAA Track & Field Championship in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, this weekend.

For the first time in his collegiate throwing career, Bowdoin senior John Pietro, of Sutton, Mass., has qualified for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship. However, his events, the shot put and hammer throw, are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday in LaCrosse, Wisconsin — in direct conflict with Commencement.

The solution was simple. Pietro met President Clayton Rose on the steps of the Museum of Art Tuesday morning to receive his diploma — officially becoming the first graduate of the Bowdoin College Class of 2018.

Pietro and three underclassmen will head to the NCAA Championship in Wisconsin Thursday.
