More than sixty alumni, parents, and friends of Bowdoin braved a windy and rainy night to gather at the Providence Art Club for a reception with President Clayton Rose. The event host and chair of the Bowdoin College Board of Trustees, Shelley Cyr ’76, P’12, welcomed guests and introduced President Rose who offered remarks on some of the recent exciting announcements at the College including the Schiller Coastal Studies Center, the Roux Center for the Environment, THRIVE, and the Bowdoin Public Service Initiative. Both Shelley and President Rose touched on the similarities of Bowdoin and Rhode Island. Bowdoin is a small college in Maine, while Rhode Island is a small state in the U.S. Both Bowdoin and Rhode Island increase in size at low tide, and the much-photographed Class of 1912 stone Polar Bear that sits between Smith Union and the Bowdoin Chapel originated from a quarry in Rhode Island, making one of Bowdoin’s most iconic Polar Bears a Rhode Islander.
