Rudalevige’s Washington Post Blog Examines Civil Rights and Equality
“When we think about civil rights, we tend to think about marches and movements and martyrs,” writes Thomas Brackett Reed Professor of Government Andrew Rudalevige in The Washington Post. “But,” he continues,”many kinds of people have pushed us to take a broader view of the Declaration of Independence’s brave claim that ‘all men are created equal.'”
Rudalevige’s latest contribution to the Monkey Cage, a political science blog published by The Post, asks what equality means, and looks at the history of America’s civil rights struggles, whether it’s for racial equality, gender equality or equality for LGBT citizens.
Over the summer The Monkey Cage has been regularly publishing an episode per week of Founding Principles, a series of short videos presented by Rudalevige explaining how American government works. This chapter—the penultimate of fifteen—is titled “Civil Rights.”
