New York Times: Dean Scanlon's Biography of Civil Rights Activist Hedgeman is 'Long Overdue'

Until There is Justice

A biography of African-American activist Anna Arnold Hedgeman is “long overdue,” says The New York Times.

Until There is Justice (Oxford University Press), the latest book by Dean for Academic Affairs Jennifer Scanlon, sets out to correct this neglect by mining Hedgeman’s unpublished papers and published memoirs.

“This biography presents readers with a puzzle,” says the review. “How did a naïve girl, growing up in the only African-American family in a small white town, develop such an inclusive understanding of justice?” Read the New York Times review.
