Bereavement Leave

Date: January 2007

Policy: Bowdoin College grants up to five days of paid bereavement leave to employees who suffer the death of a close relative or an individual whose relationship with the employee is characterized by mutual responsibility and support.

The amount of leave time and the employee's relationship to the deceased should be discussed, approved, and documented by the supervisor and depends, for each occurrence, on the closeness of the relationship, travel time, and other relevant circumstances. Employees should mark bereavement time on the time record as "BERV." It is recommended that supervisors use the comment line of the time record to indicate the name of the deceased, nature of relationship and other approval notes.

Vacation time may be used in addition to bereavement time with supervisory approval.
