Vision Plan

Eligible employees may take part in the College’s Vision Plan. This benefit helps you save money on routine eye exams, glasses and contact lenses.

Am I eligible?

Regular benefits eligible employees working 20 or more hours per week can be part of the Vision Plan.  You can enroll in the Vision Plan even if you do not want to participate in other College benefit plans.  See the Eligibility page for more information.

How do I take part in the plan?

Enrollment in the vision plan is available during the College’s annual open enrollment period or at the time you are hired as a new employee.  There are no special enrollments allowed for qualified events during the year (including the ability to drop coverage).

How much does it cost?

The monthly costs made (via payroll deduction) on a pre-tax basis are as follows:

What does it cover?

The Vision Plan helps you save money when you go to the eye doctor and on some eye care purchases such as:

  • *Eye Exam (once every 12 months)
  • **Contact Lens Fit and Follow- up (once every 12 months)
  • Frames (once every 24 months)
  • Lenses (once every 12 months)
  • LASIK and PRK Vision Correction
  • Eye Care Supplies (such as cleaning cloths and solutions)

*A routine eye exam is also covered by the Bowdoin College PPO Health Plan at 100% in-network (once every year for children up to age 19 and once every two years for adults).  A routine eye exam is covered by the Bowdoin College HDHP Option 1 and Option 2 at 100% once every calendar year. Coverage by the Vision Plan will be secondary to coverage through Bowdoin’s health plan (or other health coverage that you may have outside of Bowdoin that provides coverage for a routine eye exam).

**Replacement contact lenses can be purchased easily by visiting  The lenses will be shipped direct to your home at less than retail pricing and EyeMed will contact your physician to confirm your prescription.   To take advantage of this you must have a valid prescription for the lenses you wish to purchase.

You can use your discount only at certain EyeMed In-Network providers.  Some of the network providers include:

  • LensCrafters
  • EyeSite Optical stores (formerly Pearle Vision of Maine)
  • Sears
  • Target Optical
  • JCPenney
