The Armagnac Breviary was produced with the traditional materials and techniques that had been used by European book makers since the early Middle Ages. Now separated into two volumes, the complete book includes 693 leaves, approximately 2800 large illuminated initials, and 47 miniatures. Miniatures are independent illustrations as opposed to a part of a larger scene or decorative element like initials or borders. Breviaries like this one are among some of the most lavishly illuminated manuscripts that were created for French aristocracy or aristocratic patrons during the “golden age” of the late fourteenth to early fifteenth century. The detailed miniatures and ornamental elements were created by at least four different artistson high-quality parchment which would have been an expensive material at the time. The four artists can be distinguished by their unique styles. By identifying the artists and their signature styles scholars have been able to connect other manuscripts to the artists who collectively created the Armagnac Breviary.
