Armagnac Breviary

Function and Reunification

Like the Keble-Petre Hours, the Armagnac Breviary included a religious calendar and a cycle of prayers that guided the reader through their devotional practice. Owning a book like the Armagnac Breviary was not only demonstration of the owner’s piety, but also an assertion of their wealth and status. While the Breviary was meant to be usedfor private devotion, the owners would have been likely to show off such a prized possession, and it would have been admired by anyone who saw it. The original owners, Jean de Roussay and Jeanne de Chepoy were not nobles, so an elaborate gift like this would have been treasured for years to come.
