ABOUT

Commemorating its 50th anniversary, this website was created to shed new light on the exhibition The Portrayal of the Negro in American Painting, organized by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in 1964. While critically acclaimed at the time, this seminal exhibition has not received significant attention. Like the exhibition, this website is a collaborative effort. Organized by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the Department of Art History, and the Digital and Computational Studies Initiative, this website brings this historic exhibition into the digital realm to continue its legacy.

Much of the content for this website was generated by undergraduate students in the course Race and Representation in American Art, taught by Assistant Professor Dana E. Byrd in Spring 2014. To contact the website's organizers for more information, write to: BCMA1964show@gmail.com
