ON VIEW AT THE BOWDOIN COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART FROM MARCH 5TH TO JUNE 7TH 2015
A fully-illustrated exhibition catalogue co-published with The MIT Press is available for purchase at the Bowdoin book store. Edited by Sarah J. Montross, Andrew W. Mellon Post-doctoral Curatorial Fellow, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, with essays by Rodrigo Alonso, Rory O’Dea, and Miguel Ángel Fernández Delgado, this book offers an expanded exploration of how artists from the United States and Latin America visualized the future. Inspired variously by the “golden age” of science fiction, the Cold War, the space race, and the counterculture, these artists expressed both optimism and pessimism about humanity’s prospects.
The catalogue includes a lead essay mapping central themes of the exhibition; an exploration of how Latin American artists have depicted astronomic phenomena, utopian projects, and the modern machine; an essay on space-age art in Argentina during the 1960s; and a focused study on Robert Smithson and science fiction.
