The Young Alumni Leadership Program (YALP) was created in 1998 to engage students in their senior year at Bowdoin and prepare them to be active alumni. The program consists of students who receive leadership training, get an inside look at College operations, and participate in various projects to build class unity and volunteer structures.

What is expected of a YALP volunteer?

YALP provides unique opportunities to see Bowdoin "behind the scenes," meet with trustees and college officials, and become more involved as members of the Class of 2010. A time commitment of about two hours per week during the months of January through March is expected of all YALP volunteers. This includes mandatory attendance at all events and trainings. YALP participants should have an enthusiasm for philanthropy, and be committed to establishing and enhancing relationships between alumni and Bowdoin.

Some results of YALP over the years:

  • Senior class unity: One of the program's biggest successes is creating a better sense of a class identity through attendance at YALP events.
  • Behind-the-scenes knowledge of Bowdoin: The YALP program presents the unique opportunity to learn about what makes the College one of the best-run schools in the nation, some of its challenges, and Bowdoin's future direction.
  • Alumni volunteer opportunities: Many seniors are excited about graduating, but want to keep Bowdoin in their lives after graduation. YALP educates and recruits individuals to various volunteer opportunities at Bowdoin post-graduation.
  • Young alumni participation: Since YALP was established, Bowdoin has seen a great increase in Young Alumni participation through volunteerism and gifts to the Alumni Fund.
