"Writers really do need to write multiple drafts. I think this is the single most important thing of the process, the mandatory drafting process with time in-between. Class continues in the interim and students may rethink a point or an issue. Contact with a peer reader and writer, the WA, is also important. I don't want students to feel they are solely writing for one professor or one discipline or one grade. I think it is important for them to witness that writing is all about communication on a fundamental level, and that if the communication is not effective, the overall paper will not be either, regardless of content, course, prof., etc." (Faculty Member Spring 2006)
"The Writing Project forces you to spend more time on your paper. The assistant's insight was very helpful and made me hear the weaknesses and strong points of my paper." (Student, Class of 2004)
"The papers really improved and it showed students that we take writing seriously. The Writing Assistants also allowed me to devote more time to providing comments on content." (Professor)
"It was very helpful to get intelligent, critical feedback that had no grade attached so that I could improve my papers." (Student, Class of 2001)
"Being able to talk to someone who has read my paper is invaluable. I feel really comfortable talking to my writing assistant and she helps me to think about my writing from another perspective." (Student, Class of 2003)
The Writing Project is a writing-across-the-curriculum program that offers student writers a chance to talk through their ideas with a peer writing assistant. These guided conversations lead to better learning, thinking, and writing.
The Writing Project is based on these premises:
Through the Writing Project, students in any discipline work with peer Writing Assistants to improve their writing process and strengthen their writing. Writing Assistants work with students in selected courses, drop-in workshops, and semester- or year-long partnerships.
