The AXIS 2100 camera is a stand alone Web server, which means that it doesn't function like a peripheral (like a printer or scanner) but is actually a system all of itself, complete with its own operating system and identity on the Network.
The photos you see on the website are taken by the camera and then FTPed (File Transfer Protocol) from the camera once per minute based on a CRON script running under the camera's operating system. The photos are then sent to Bowdoin College's main web server (WWW) where they are referenced by the webcams' main pages. The pages use an HTML meta tag to refresh themselves (and the image) once every 60 seconds.
