City Academy School, St. Louis, Missouri
This summer I spent my time volunteering at City Academy, a private elementary school in St. Louis, Missouri that offers a three-month summer school program for its students. Throughout my time working with the students I familiarized them with several different cameras including press, digital, pinhole, 35mm, medium format, and Polaroid. In addition to learning how to use these various cameras, the students also mastered editing techniques, basic critique methods, knowledge of famous photographers, and common terminology of the medium. However, the most significant portion of the class was the time that the students spent with the many disposable cameras given to them. I purchased inexpensive, off brand disposable cameras and gave one to each student at the start of every week. At the end of the program I put together an exhibit of their work where parents, faculty, and sponsors of my program were able to visit with the young photographers.
