Carrie Scanga

breathe
44' x 32' x 12', painted tracing paper, drypoint on gampi, glue, string.
Installation at St. Louis Craft Alliance’s Grand Center Contemporary Arts Space, 2011.

Viewers enter this installation under a vaulted ceiling structure that is like an inverted honeycomb. Drypoint images hang from the walls. Visitors participate by inflating flat paper boxes with exhaled breath, inserting a written wish, and tying these to the ends of a strings hanging from the ceiling. Over the course of the exhibition, there is an accumulation of boxes in and around the golden canopy.

view from high places
18' x 14' x 10', tracing paper with intaglio printing, thread.
A tower of translucent paper bricks was stacked on a grid of string to a height of 9’. The strings spanned the space, partially obscuring a 12’ x 6’ drypoint print that hangs on the back wall of the gallery.
Viewers ducked under the higher set of strings in order to enter the space between the tower and the 12’ x 6’ drypoint print. The scene depicted in the drypoint print is imagined to be from the perspective of this high window in the tower.
