SHAUN LEONARDO
Artist Lecture
7:30 pm, Beam Classroom, VAC
With his current body of work Shaun El C. Leonardo creates and manipulates hyper-masculine heroes to discuss the difficulty a person of complex race and nationality encounters while trying to locate himself within his pop cultures during his own development of masculinity. Using plywood cutouts El C. isolates forms that are often larger than life figures, busts or fragments while performance allows him to embody these heroes rather than depicting their imagery. Both physically and socially his performances relate the desperation and, often times, failure we experience when attempting to either locate ourselves within our popular cultures or aspire to grand yet unattainable cultural ideals.
Originally from Queens, Shaun has returned to New York City a recent graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute. During his studies he participated in the Skowhegan residency in 2004 and was a recipient of the New York Studio School Drawing Marathon Scholarship in 2005.
Shaun El C. Leonardo is currently showing in San Francisco and Dallas and awaiting fall exhibits in Chelsea at Rush Arts and Capsule galleries.
Shaun's visit to Bowdoin will include a performance art piece Sunday, October 2, in Smith Union at 4:00PM, an artist slide lecture as well as a visit to Professor Mark Wethli's Advanced Studies class for a visiting critique of student work.
