Bowdoin's Department of Theater and Dance presents Attempts On Her Life by Martin Crimp on Thursday through Saturday, April 2-4, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. with an additional matinee performance at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 4 in Wish Theater. The performances are free and open to the public. General admission tickets are available at the Smith Union Information desk, at 207-725-3375 and at the door. The production is directed by Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Theater and Dance, Roger Bechtel.
Part theater production, part art installation, and part multi-media spectacle, Attempts on Her Life is a boundary-breaking work that has been hailed throughout Europe as a performance masterpiece. It loosely tells the story of Anne – or is it Annie? Or Anya? Or Anny? – a woman who just may or may not be a Hollywood creation. As two film producers make an attempt to create Anne, Anne is making attempts on her own life. In the end, we can’t be sure if she is Hollywood hype, a Hockey mom, an international terrorist, the girl next door, or even dead or alive, real or fictional. Attempts on Her Life leaves us guessing – and guessing about our own reality in the age of global capital and media culture.
An experimental playwright living in London, Crimp’s work has been produced at the National Theatre of England, the Orange Tree Theatre, and the Royal Court Theatre, where he is a writer-in-residence. Attempts on Her Life has been translated into twenty languages, and been performed around the world. Bowdoin’s production, however, will be one of the very few ever done in the U.S.
The director and cast will host a talk-back after each performance.
Attempts On Her Life is produced with assistance from the Alice Cooper Morse Fund for the Performing Arts and the Friends of Bowdoin Fund.
