Theater and Dance at Bowdoin College is founded on two key ideas: that the purpose of performance is to challenge our perceptions and understanding of the world; and that excellence in the performing arts requires us to engage with both theory and practice. At Bowdoin, students combine studio practice and the history of global performance to create original works for stage and screen, and to explore and transform the world around them. Working across genres, programs in Theater and Dance empower and challenge students within an environment that fosters imaginative exploration, rigorous thinking, and the development of performing artists and thinkers who will shape performance in the 21st century. Bowdoin students can be a part of Theater and Dance through classes, performing in departmental shows, working backstage, or joining one of the many student theater and dance groups on campus. All students are encouraged to participate regardless of prior experience.
