December Dance Concert
December 3 - 5, 2009
Pickard Theater
This season’s concert featured an Independent Study Project by Alex Pfister and Elisa Kim based on their study of cellular biology: occurring at the junction of social, artistic, and scientific desire, the dance was marked by flying lab coats, dancing science professors and lush microscopic imagery.
Faculty-directed dances ranged from a celebration of the music of Quartette Indigo—a rhythmically driven, tonally rich jazz string quartet—to a mediation on the color blue—and an exploration of light and shadow which included dancing flashlights and a duet for a single dancer and her spotlight.
Choreographic devices, scores, and sources were exposed through studies,
short dances, and daring improvisations by a choreography class whose
members embodied a range of dance histories and practice—from hip-hop,
to ballet, to modern dance, and beyond.
