Green Transportation

Whether you are trying to get a quick ride downtown or are planning a trip to Portland, Boston, or beyond, Bowdoin provides students with many options to make it not only easier for you travel but also greener and better for the environment.  Read below for details on the many transportation options at Bowdoin - or watch Bowdoin students talk about their ease of travel to and from campus with the twice-daily buses and trains departing from Brunswick for Portland and Boston each day!

Carpooling with the RideShare App

To make carpooling easier, Bowdoin has a private “Rideshare” app and website for students to use, especially during college breaks. Whether you live in New York and have space in your car, or you live in California and need a ride to the airport, there are many opportunities to cut down on car emissions by carpooling. It is simple to use – just post whether you need a ride or whether you have space to give a ride and see what other students have posted. View the Rideshare app on your computer or mobile device at:

Carpooling with the Go Maine NuRide website is where you can find free, money-saving, energy efficient commuting solutions. GO MAINE is the statewide commuter services program sponsored by MaineDOT and the Maine Turnpike Authority.  In the fall of 2015 GO Maine began a partnership with NuRide, the nation’s largest commuter rewards program.  With NuRide you can now be rewarded for your green transportation choices. It’s easy and free! Simply go to, fill out your profile, find your ride matches, record your trips and get your rewards.  Rewards include restaurant coupons, retailers discounts, and tickets to shows and attractions. And new ones are added often.  GO MAINE also offers an Emergency Ride Home Benefit (ERH) to all registered GO MAINE NuRide members.  Check out their facebook page with regular updates about being a commuter in Maine!

Academic & Club Trips

Student clubs can sign out campus vehicles from Bowdoin’s Vehicle fleet as long as their group is registered with Student Activities and they have a valid Bowdoin College project code. Student Club drivers must meet all vehicle policy eligibility requirements and complete an Authorization to Drive form for each trip. This policy can be used for events such as going to lectures off campus or doing trips with the Outing Club. Students can also use Bowdoin vehicles to travel for mentoring projects or academic internships, as long as the Department agrees to sponsor the travel.

Bowdoin EV Charging Stations

Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations are now available for the Bowdoin College community and campus visitors. Two level 2 chargers are located in the Russwurm Parking lot next to the John Brown Russwurm African-American Center on College Street.  The chargers can be utilized with any major credit card.  The cost is $1.00 per hour and cars must be moved when they are done charging.

The charging payment station is managed by Greenlots.  Users can access the Greenlots website or app to track the availability of the charge stations as well as the progress of their charging once plugged in.  Users of iPhone (iOS5 or later) and Android (2.2 and up) can take advantage of the free Greenlots app which allows users to load funds onto the app and manage payments on site with their phone.
