College House Eco-Reps

Since 2004, Bowdoin's EcoReps have worked to integrate Sustainable Bowdoin's mission into student life by improving communication between students and the administration, organizing projects to introduce new students to Bowdoin's environmental commitment, and offering constant reminders of the individual's obligation to the planet and a greener future.

College House Eco-Reps work with their housemates to promote a culture that integrates sustainable behaviors into day-to-day life. They participate in weekly house meetings and act as a point person for any questions about sustainability or for additional resources the house may want to pursue for their individual environmental goals. So far in the 2017-2018 school year, the College House Eco Reps are exploring ways to replace disposable cups with reusable ones at House events, planning programs on mindfulness, outdoor frolicking, and partnering with other green groups on campus for collaborative projects.

Baxter & Russwurm - Jessi Friedman

Hey everyone! I'm Jessi and I call sunny Los Angeles, CA my home, and I'm the Eco-Rep for Baxter House and Russwurm. I'm a sophomore and I'm planning on a major in Math and Environmental Studies, as well as a minor in Earth and Oceanographic Science. On campus, I'm involved with The Bowdoin Outing Club (BOC), Safe Space, the Math department, and I also volunteer at the local elementary school (Harriet Beecher Stowe) where I am a math tutor. I love scuba diving, skiing, and outdoor recreation, which is why protecting our planet is of the utmost importance to me. Because Baxter is the biggest college house on campus, we have the potential to create a lot of waste, but we also have the potential to make a really big impact on campus and create a sustainable social scene. I'm excited to see what Bowdoin can do to contribute to the fight against climate change!

Burnett - Graham Bendickson

Burnett - Graham Bendickson

Hello! I am a sophomore eco-reping Burnett this year. I am from McLean, Virginia, and am interested in studying Biology and Earth and Oceanographic Science. On campus, I am a trip leader for the outing club, trombonist in the Bowdoin College Orchestra, and play for Bowdoin’s club water polo team. I love the outdoors, especially anything on the water, and am inspired by my will to protect the world I love in my work with Sustainable Bowdoin. I hope to share this mission with my house-mates and Bowdoin as a whole, practicing green living for a healthier environment.

Helmreich - Caroline Kranefuss

Helmreich - Caroline Kranefuss

Bowdoin was my top choice at the end of a very, very long college search because of the gorgeous scenery and nature that surrounded it. Growing up, my favorite memories included attending and later working at a summer camp at a nearby nature preserve and exploring the trails near my house with my younger sister. As I got older, I began to run cross-country and loved getting lost on long runs outside. Although I considered some city schools when looking at colleges, I ultimately came back to my roots and chose Bowdoin, and have been amply rewarded with runs through farms and to the ocean with the cross-country team as well as student body that appreciates nature too. It’s memories like these that drive my passion for sustainability - our use of the Earth is an incredible gift, and we ought to treat it as such! As Helm’s eco-rep this year, I hope to instill sustainable values in my house’s everyday life and make daring, out-of-the-box changes in how we approach consumption and waste as a team, so that our enjoyment of the nature surrounding us lasts for generations to come.

Ladd & 30 College Street - Billy Allen

Hi everyone I’m Billy. I’m a sophomore from Hopkinton Massachusetts (semi-JOB) and a prospective biology major and Hispanic studies minor. On campus, I’m in the Habitat for Humanity club, I play club hockey, and I love running in the Brunswick Commons. I also work at the Bowdoin Children’s Center. I’m really excited to be the Eco-rep for Ladd House and 30 College and to program some awesome events with the Sustainability Office! I think that one of the most important parts of living sustainably is appreciating and spending time in nature and I look forward to bringing that philosophy into eco-reping!

Quinby - Peter Jacobson

Quinby - Peter Jacobson

Hey all! I’m a sophomore from Mount Desert Island, Maine, and this year I’ll be functioning as the Eco-Rep for Quinby House. Though still uncertain, I hope to major in Environmental Studies and Anthropology. I fill my time on campus singing with the Meddiebempsters, managing an Improv group, mentoring at a local elementary school, running often, and hanging around with friends! Having been so fortunate to grow up with a National Park practically at my doorstep, I’ve cultivated a strong enthusiasm and love for all things natural, and continue to turn to the woods and ocean when seeking joy or solace. I’m super stoked to be spearheading Quinby’s sustainability efforts this year, and can’t wait to see what gets accomplished!

Hi everyone! I am a sophomore from Oakland, California, and I'm very excited to be the eco rep for Reed House this year. I love sailing (I'm on the Bowdoin team), singing, napping on the quad, and eating good food. I am planning to minor in music and major in biochemistry and environmental studies. I've always been really interested in how science and the environment interact, and I'm excited to apply all of that theoretical information into programs that make Reed life more sustainable
