Eco Reps for Apartments & Upperclass Dorms

Since 2004, Bowdoin's Eco Reps have worked to integrate Sustainable Bowdoin's mission into student life by improving communication between students and the administration, organizing projects to introduce new students to Bowdoin's environmental commitment, and offering constant reminders of the individual's obligation to the planet and a greener future. For 2017-2018, the Upper Class Dorm Eco Reps have started to work on several projects addressing local land use history and how to get more people more excited about local food, farming and cooking!

Upperclass Eco Reps work with their dormmates to promote a culture that integrates sustainable behaviors into day-to-day life. They plan eco-friendly dorm events, act as a point person for any questions about sustainability, and help residents pursue individual environmental goals.

New for 2017-2018, the Eco Reps for the Apartments are working independently on how to best engage with and support Bowdoin students who are living more independently in the 5 apartment complexes. Thinking of the Apartments as neighborhoods, rather than united dorms is a first step. This also gives these Eco Reps more time to focus on full-campus programs. Great ideas and plans are in the works!

Hi, everyone! My name is Danielle Horne, and I will be the Eco-Rep for both 52 Harpswell and Smith House this year. Here at Bowdoin I’m a member of the BOC, Bowdoin College Concert Band (I play the clarinet), and a few other clubs. I also plan to major in Biology with a minor in Environmental Studies. My name is Bolor-Erdene (pronounced "Bo-lahr") Jagdagdorj and I was born in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and raised in Columbia, Missouri. I'm a computer science and chemistry double major. Since coming to Maine, I've fallen in love with the proximity to the ocean and the picturesque fall season.  When I'm not in Searles or Druck, I spend my days rowing on the New Meadows River.  I'm excited to help spread awareness of environmental issues and ways to preserve the planet!

Chamberlain - Katharine Toll

My name is Katharine Toll, and I am a sophomore from Harvard, a small town in central Massachusetts. I’m studying chemistry with an environmental concentration and a minor in German. I grew up with a passion for the outdoors, especially hiking and kayaking, which has evolved into a passion for environmental issues. This summer, I worked for Heifer International on a production and educational farm, teaching about agriculture, sustainability, and issues of poverty. It was an amazing experience to be involved in the front lines of sustainable agriculture and working with people who are so invested in local, small-scale food systems. I’m looking forward to helping make our campus a greener place!

Coles Tower - Nickie Mitch

Coles Tower - Nickie Mitch

My name is Nickie (or Nicholas if you’re my mom) Mitch and I’m a senior from Indiana majoring in Government and Legal Studies and Environmental Studies with a minor in Earth and Oceanographic Science. This past summer I worked here in Brunswick as an External Affairs Fellow at the Nature Conservancy in Maine. Last summer, I was in Washington, DC working as a Climate Change Communication Intern for the National Park Service and the summer before that I worked as a Field Naturalist Educator for the Damariscotta River Association just a few towns up the coast from here. All these jobs have made me really passionate about communicating with people and facilitating conversations about important environmental issues and I am excited to do that as an Eco-Rep.  In the environmental field, I’m especially interested in water/fisheries issues, urban planning, and food systems, but can definitely talk endlessly about pretty much any environmental issue. Outside of environmental things, I’m a big fan of dogs and (unrelated to dogs) I am involved in a variety of things on campus including The Bowdoin Orient, Admissions (tour guiding), WBOR, and Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring.

Sarah Kelley - Coles Tower

Sarah Kelley - Coles Tower

Hi! My name is Sarah and I'm a senior from Winnetka, Illinois majoring in Psychology with a minor in Education. My favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors are through running and hiking. Last spring I had the opportunity to study abroad in Stockholm, Sweden, which is a mecca for sustainable innovation and creativity. While studying there I was both excited and impressed by their waste management (90% of their materials are recycled- the Swede's are so good at recycling that they actually have to import trash from other countries to keep their recycling plants going!). While in Sweden I was also impressed by their green urban designs and widespread commitment to a sustainable future. I'm excited to bring some of that same enthusiasm to Coles Tower this year! Outside of the sustainability office I'm also a member of the women's cross country and track teams and am a part of the McKeen Center's Falcon Friends mentoring program at Bowdoinham Elementary School.

Monica Xing - Brunswick & Harpswell Apartments

Monica Xing - Brunswick & Harpswell Apartments

Hi! My name is Monica Xing (class of 2019) and I’ll be one of Brunswick Apartments' Eco-Reps this year! I’m from a small, rural town in western Massachusetts, where hiking, handpicking your own produce, and biking to one of many local farm stands are common pastimes. Because my dad is a passionate plant and soil scientist, I’ve grown up exposed to environmental issues and the direct impact we have on the earth. Over the years, my appreciation for the environment has increased as I’ve come to realize that places environmentally similar to my hometown are becoming less and less common. I’d love to bring my family’s environmentally friendly habits to Bowdoin, and I believe the Eco-Rep position will help me achieve this. Feel free to reach out whenever or wherever (you’ll most likely find me at the HL library circ desk, in the baked goods aisle at Hannaford, and maybe on one of the ellipticals in Buck). I’m always happy to talk about anything, Eco-Rep related or not, and I look forward to working with everyone!
