Solid Waste is another relatively minor part of Bowdoin’s emissions, but an area where we can make improvements. Bowdoin’s trash is sent to local landfills, creating methane gas as the waste decomposes over time. This methane is released into the atmosphere and there is currently no methane capture at our local landfills. With Single Stream recycling there are greater opportunities for Bowdoin to divert a larger portion of our waste into the recycling process. Our current rate of recycling to land filling is roughly 35%:65%.
