On-campus stationary sources include nearly all of the heating emissions at the college (excluding the geothermal heating systems in Osher & West Halls). Given its location in Maine, heating is an essential - and energy intensive - part of life at Bowdoin. While it varies each year, Bowdoin’s heating emissions are consistently the largest portion of Bowdoin’s direct carbon footprint. That said, Bowdoin has seen a 20% decrease in campus steam plant emissions in the five years between 2003 and 2007.
