Sustainable Bowdoin

step it up rally

The Sustainable Bowdoin office is focused on reducing Bowdoin's impact on the environment. Staffed by a full-time Sustainability Coordinator, the office coordinates the efforts of students and other members of the campus community who are working to improve Bowdoin's environmental performance. There are many ways to get involved with sustainability efforts on campus - join Sustainable Bowdoin to receive emails and attend meetings, or apply for a job at the Sustainable Bowdoin office.

Please feel free to contact Keisha Payson, Coordinator for a Sustainable Bowdoin, at cpayson@bowdoin.edu to find out more or to get involved.

Van Du

Van Du

A Sustainable Bowdoin veteran, previously an ECO-Rep, Van authors the Installments, Sustainable Bowdoin's monthly newsletter placed in bathroom stalls. Van also writes many of Sustainable Bowdoin's press releases, which are published in The Orient student newspaper. She also does her fair share of event organizing, dressing up in costume, and generally being a cheerleader for sustainability!

Kelly Pitts
Returning to Sustainable Bowdoin after being abroad, Kelly's main projects include disseminating information on campus projects and promoting events such as the Annual Energy Conservation Dorm Competition. Kelly also edits the webpage and works with Van in writing and distributing The Installment.

Maina Handmaker
Maina just started working with Sustainable Bowdoin, but she's ready to help spread the word that we all have a part to play in helping the planet. This year, she'll be helping with a lot of behind-the-scenes work - advertising for events and programs, monitoring the recycling of things that don't get picked up by the single-stream system, entering data for our energy-rebate program, as well as doing research in preparation for new projects.

Laura Rekedal, Hanne Wieschhoff, Liza Cohen, and Sara Holby make college apartment recycling possible through their work with Facilities Management.

EcoReps

Since 2004, Bowdoin's EcoReps have worked to integrate Sustainable Bowdoin's mission into student life by improving communication between students and the administration, organizing projects to introduce new students to Bowdoin's environmental commitment , and offering constant reminders of the individual's obligation the the planet and a greener future. Inspired by the success of this influential student team's work with the first year dorms, the college is now implementing a faculty EcoRep program, with one or more representative from each department and office educating their colleagues about sustainable practices.

EcoMascots

Get to know Bowdoin's three EcoMascots, the fun faces of the student sustainability effort. Dan, Jan, and Kaptian Kilowatt are a constant presence and a frequent reminder of the individual's power to make the planet a greener place!

Sustainable Bowdoin (Student Organization)

Sustainable Bowdoin is also the name of a student organization that meets once a month to discuss ideas and initiatives that help make Bowdoin College a more sustainable community. This large group of students is subdivided into five committees: Administration, Compost, Energy, Recycle, and Reduce-Reuse.
