Sustainable Day Trips
Here are some beautiful spots to enjoy alone or with friends. Just remember - protect what you love! Follow all park regulations and pack out whatever provisions you bring in.
By Bike:
Simpson's Point
Enjoy an easy, quiet ride and rewarding ocean view. Makes a great run, too!
How to get there:
- Start off by heading south on Maine Street (away from town)
- Stay to the left when the road forks; this will become Mere Point Road
- After about a mile, take a left onto Simpson's Point Road
- Stay on this road until it ends
- (Round trip is about 3 miles)
Crystal Springs Farm
Short ride to a great place. Visit the draft horses and walk or snowshoe along their network of trails. Local and organic farm stand on Saturday mornings in the summer and fall.
How to get there:
- Start off going south on Maine Street (away from town)
- Turn right onto Pleasant Hill Road
- Continue on Pleasant Hill Road, farm is on your left
- (Less than 2 miles round trip)
Wolf's Neck State Park
Waterfront farm and camping sites, as well as some hiking trails. A bit more ambitious of a ride, but makes for a great afternoon.
How to get there:
- There are a few options to get to Wolfe's Neck, but this is simplest:
- Start off north on Maine Street (away from town)
- Turn right onto Pleasant Hill Road
- After about four miles, turn left onto Flying Point Road
- Follow for just under a mile, then turn right onto Wolf Neck Road
- This will take you to the park
- (About 12 miles roundtrip)
Maquoit Bay (Wharton Point)
A beautiful spot - go during low tide to see Maine clammers in action.
How to get there:
- Go south on Maine Street (away from town)
- When road forks, stay right; road becomes Maquoit Road
- Stay on Maquoit Road until it ends
- (Less than 4 miles roundtrip)
By Car:
Popham Beach State Park
Over a mile of sandy beach and swimmable water in the early Fall. Picnic tables and barbecue pits, as well as facilities, available. Picturesque view of Maine islands and lighthouse! Parking fee in summer.
How to get there:
- Take Route 1 north to Bath
- Get off at the exit for High Street, and at the top of the ramp take a right, toward Phippsburg (Rt 209)
- Stay on Rt 209, being sure to turn left when the road splits with Rt 216
- Continue following signs until you see beach parking area on your right
- (Takes about 40 minutes)
Reid State Park
Sandy beach, dunes, imposing rocks, warm salt water pool, and crashing waves await. Facilities, picnic tables, and some walking trails. Entrance fee in the summer.
How to get there:
- Follow Route 1 north past Bath and over the bridge to Woolwich
- Immediately after the bridge, stay in the right lane and exit towards Georgetown (Rt 127)
- Continue of Rt 127 onto Georgetown Island
- After about seven miles, take a right at the sign for Reid State Park, ontfsfo Seguinland Road
- Follow to park gate
- (Takes about 40 minutes)
Land's End
A great view of classic Maine coastline, and a beautiful drive too!
How to get there:
- There are two ways to get there. The following is generally the way Bowdoin kids go, and it avoids going through Cook's Corner.
- Set out going south on Rt 123 (past the athletics center and "Crackhouse")
- After about 4 miles, take a left onto Mountain Road at the blinking yellow light
- You will go over a bridge; follow road for about 2 miles until it ends
- Take a right onto Rt 24, onto Orr's Island
- Stay on Rt 24 until it ends
- (Takes about 25 minutes)
