Tips to help conserve energy at Bowdoin:

  • Share study space rather than studying alone in a room with overhead lights.
  • Last one out? Turn off lights in classrooms, restrooms and common areas.
  • Shut off all copiers and computers on nights and weekends.
  • Use a drying rack instead of a clothes dryer.
  • Take the stairs instead of th elevator.
  • If you are going out for lunch and don't want to turn the whole computer off, please turn off the monitor and put the computer in stand by mode. Please read the Green Computing Tips for directions in using stand by mode.
  • Buy Energy Star appliances. To get ideas for your dorm room check out this Energy Star shopping list [pdf].
  • Install a compact fluorescent bulb in your desk lamp - they use a fourth the amount of energy as a regular incandescent bulb. To get one for your room or office, contact Keisha Payson.
  • Set the heat at 68°F in winter and the air conditioning to 76°F in summer and dress appropriately.
  • Close storm windows  (especially in preparation for the winter months).
  • Contact Facilities Management with heating or cooling problems at x3333.
  • Become an Eco-Rep for your building.  Visit our Eco-Rep website for more info.
  • Help out with the Energy Conservation Dorm Competition in the fall.  Contact Keisha Payson to volunteer.
  • Get involved with Green Graduation, an effort to make graduation a zero impact event. Contact Keisha Payson for details.
