Meet the 2008-2009 Student EcoReps

EcoRep EmblemThe Student EcoReps are a committed group of individuals dedicated to informing you about sustainability and your role in a greener future. Feel free to use your affiliated EcoRep as a resource, and contact them with any concerns, suggestions, or encouragement. You can also show your dedication to environmental responsibility by joining your dorm's EcoAction Committee. Contact your EcoRep for more information.

Ouda Baxter | 2011 | Moore Hall

Ouda BaxterNot only is recycling sexy, it's easy! Feel free to ask me any questions, get lunch or just grab me randomly to frolic on the Quad. In addition to being an EcoRep this year, I'll also be learning to lead trips in Leadership Training with the Bowdoin Outing Club (sign up so that I can be your trip-leader in the Spring!), as well as cooking delicious organic food with the Bowdoin Co-op once a week and going trigger-happy for my Photography class. Other than hugging trees, I'm up for throwing (and catching) frisbees anytime, reading poetry by Billy Collins, and keeping an ear out for new music for my radio show on WBOR: Radio Haiku. I look forward to meeting you and creating a chill, environmentally conscious 2008-2009 year.

Jeff D. Cook | 2011 | Osher Hall

Jeff D. CookHey, guys. Jeff is the name, and EcoRep’n is my game. I am a tentative Environmental Studies and Biology major, but there are so many aspects to my person beside my academics. Aside from loving that saucy Mother Nature, I do a lot of other activities on campus including (but not limited to) “pimping” out Bowdoin as a tour guide, keeping the peace in the dorms as an R.A. and producing and hosting my very own television show—Pants Off, Dance Off!  Find me around campus to shoot the breeze.  Everybody’s doing it.

Rachel Eveleth | 2011 | Maine Hall

Rachel EvelethI am really excited to be an EcoRep this year. Right now, I am planning to be an Environmental Studies and Geology double major and am excited to combine what I learn in my major course work with my first year experiences with sustainability at Bowdoin. I think we owe it to ourselves and this earth to protect what resources we have left. I have seen how individuals can make an impact and I want freshmen to begin to see that living sustainably at Bowdoin and in the broader world is a realistic goal.

Larissa Gaias | 2011 | Coleman Hall

Larissa GaiasHi! I am Larissa Gaias, a sophomore from Southhampton, NY and Embden, ME. I am planning to be an Environmental Studies and Psychology Major, with a possible Biology minor. I am so excited to be working with Coleman Hall this year to help make Bowdoin a more environmentally conscious campus. I hope to see plenty of first-years working and learning together as activists and leaders. Besides working with Sustainable Bowdoin, I play Women's Rugby, mentor at Harpswell Island School, play violin in Chamber Music, and lead trips for the Outing Club. I am also a member of V-Day, and am the House Proctor at MacHouse this year.Have an amazingly fun and Eco-happy year!

Maina Handmaker | 2011 | Appleton Hall

Maina HandmakerMaina is a hurricane of energy disguised as a woman. Her enthusiasm and energeticness are matched only by the curliness of her hair.  Maina is majoring in environmental studies (big surprise) and visual arts/art history, and worked for Sustainable Bowdoin all of last year.  Maina is in almost every way a social butterfly: she’s colorful, small and has friends all over the place. You’ll probably find her around campus in classes related to the earth, or in an art studio. On a good day, however, she’ll be on the quad. Maina loves the outdoors (and might have even led your pre-o trip), and enjoys the color green, long walks on the beach or anywhere, really, and organic food. Have questions about sustainability, land slides, unruly curly hair or delicious cookies? Ask Maina! Also, she can probably tell you where all the recycling bins on campus are, so keep that in mind.  *Biographer, Julia Bond

Maryellen Hearn | 2011 | West Hall

Maryellen HearnI'm Maryellen Hearn from the land of 10,000 lakes. That's Minnesota. I am going for majors in Environmental Studies and Music because I can't seem to stay away from either of them for too long. I am super excited to be an EcoRep and more than happy to answer questions, ponderings, concerns, or confusions that come up. Of course, I'm not saying that I actually have all of these answers, but I will give you my best shot. Either way, we will most likely end up with more questions. Cool. So, other than that, I like biking a lot, singing (yay Ursus Verses!), pretending to play piano (trust me, I really don't), going on outing club trips (yay BOC!), being a part of RAKE and Success by 6, and meeting and talking to new people. So, Happy EcoYear 2008-2009!

Jonathan Viera | 2011 | Hyde Hall

Jonathan VieraThe name's Jonathan and I'm from western Massachusetts. I'm an Environmental Studies and Spanish double major. My most unique characteristic (ask anyone who knows me) is my loud laugh! If you ever wonder where I am, just listen for it.

Diana Zhang | 2011 | Winthrop Hall

Diana ZhangAs an anticipated Economics/Environmental Studies double major, I'm very excited to be Winthrop's EcoRep next year! I play Rugby, am a very involved member of the Bowdoin Women's Association, and love tutoring at Coffin Elementary. I strongly believe that college is one of those crucial developmental stages in our lives where we really begin to develop some deeply entrenched personal and social preferences that will profoundly shape how we chose to live our lives after Bowdoin. As part of that process, I want to be a reliable resource for my peers to become more environmentally conscious and have access to information about how basic living choices and habits influence their world. Please, please come talk with me! I shall try very hard to have an intelligent discussion with you and answer any questions/ concerns you may have or at least point you to someone else who can. :-)
