Food Waste Management

The bulk of Bowdoin Dining Service's food waste is donated to a nearby pig and cow farm, only minutes away in Bowdoin, ME. Donating the dining halls' scraps promotes sustainability by minimizing emissions associated with transporting waste and the methane emissions the waste would generate at the landfill. At the same time, it defers the cost of sending the scraps to the local landfill and saves farmer Michael Brooks the price of feed. Read more about this arragement here...

Bowdoin also composts a portion of its waste at the Bowdoin Organic Garden. The composted material is used at the garden.
