Bowdoin's Annual Give & Go Sale

The 2011 Give & Go is scheduled for Saturday, June 11th from 8am - 2pm in Fort Andross, located at 14 Maine Street, Brunswick.

At the close of every school year, Bowdoin students leave behind thousands of possessions – everything from clothes to couches, lamps to linens, and rugs to reading material. For varous reasons, from not having the time or ability to transport unwanted goods to local drop-off sites at Goodwill or Salvation Army, or because they just don't have enough room to fit everything back in their vehicles as they pack up for the ride home, items get left behind.  Thanks to the Give & Go sale, these items are salvaged and resold, with the profits divided among local non-profit organizations according to their volunteer hours.

Organizations participating in the 2011 sale are: Coastal Maine Great Dane Rescue, Daughters of Isabella #508, Eagles Wrestling Club, American Legion #171, American Legion Auxiliary, A Paw in the Door, Beth Israel Congregation, Bowdoin Community School PTA, Bowdoinham Community School PT, Boy Scouts 648, Brunswick Coastal Rotary, Brunswick Trinidad Sister City Association, Compassion Center Midcoast Maine, DECA Voc Tech 10, Family Focus, Girl Scouts 2208, Habitat for Humanity, Independence Association, Maine Triathalon Club, Midcoast Hunger Prevention, Mid Coast Presbyterian Church, Odyssey of the Mind Bath, Peaceworks, Seventh Day Adventists, Spurwink Services, Saint Marys, Sweetser, Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, Venture Crew 789, and Woolwich Junior Athletics.

As students head home, they place donations in large cardboard collection bins. Through an incredibly impressive effort, volunteers collect, clean and eventually sell the student donations back to the community. Everything except food and toiletries are sorted and sold, these items are donated to the Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program.

A forest of donated lamps.

The growing enthusiasm throughout the Brunswick community lead more people to Give & Go each year. Although the sale doesn't begin until 8 AM on Saturday, some arrive at 6AM or earlier to be the first to dive into the unbeatable bargains. Hundreds of people traipse through the arena in a single day, almost clearing the cavernous space by the 2 PM. Any remaining items are donated to local charities, including the Salvation Army and the 7th Day Adventist Community Center.
