Energy Star Rated Mini-Fridges

Help Bowdoin reduce electricity costs and greenhouse gas emissions - bring only energy star rated appliances to your dorm room!  While electrical appliances such as refrigerators and microwaves are not discouraged, we hope that any appliances you do bring to campus achieve the Energy Star rating developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Energy Star certification is awarded by the EPA to products that use less energy, save money and are better for the environment. Refrigerators are some of the largest consumers of energy because they run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  When installed in a dorm room they can account for roughly 65 percent of the energy use of the room.

If you plan on purchasing a mini-fridge for your dorm room, look for the Energy Star logo.  You can download a list of all those that have achieved the Energy Star rating, or visit the Enery Star website to compare models.

Starting in the Fall of 2007 Bowdoin began offering a special program with University Logistics for students interested in renting one of the most efficient Energy Star models available - the MicroFridge. The MicroFridge is actually a microwave, refrigerator and freezer all in one unit. University Logistics will save you the trip of carrying a microwave and a refrigerator to your dorm room by having the MicroFridge waiting for you upon arrival. They will also pick it up from your dorm room at the end of the year.  You can order off the University Logistics website or download their order form here.
