The Office of Religious and Spiritual life at Bowdoin provides support and guidance for students and groups involved in religious activities, faith traditions, and personal spiritual growth. Bowdoin College is committed to the principle that each religious tradition is a vital and valued part of our community, and we celebrate and nurture this religious and spiritual diversity.
The Rev. Robert Ives is Bowdoin’s Director of Religious and Spiritual Life . He does not represent any one religious tradition, but rather guides and coordinates the faith groups on campus encouraging interfaith understanding, dialogue, and education. He is available for counseling on issues of ethics, faith, and spirituality. Rev. Ives also acts as a liaison between students and the religious leaders and faith communities in Brunswick and mid coast Maine.
Appointments with Rev. Ives can be made by calling 207-798-4196, email: Rives@Bowdoin.edu, or by stopping in at Rev. Ives Office at 30 College St. or the Smith Union.
Robert Ives attended Bowdoin College ‘69 (BA) and the University of Edinburgh (MDiv). He worked for a brief period in the Bowdoin Admissions Office before becoming the teacher and minister on Monhegan Island. He served three coastal Maine churches while also working as a lobster fisherman and boat builder. For 33 years he was the Director of The Carpenter’s Boat Shop, an apprenticeship-school in Pemaquid committed to building boats, nurturing lives and serving others. He has three grown children all living in Maine.
