Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate Regulations

This information outlines the standard policies established by participating departments for students seeking credit for AP, IB, or other international exams.

Additional Information for AP, IB, and Other International Exams:

  • Bowdoin's departments vary widely in how they award credit for students who have taken Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and other international exams.
    • Please reference the documents below for details and follow-up directly with the department/program if you have additional questions.
  • All AP, IB, or other international exam scores must be submitted to Bowdoin,
    • Before the end of the sophomore year for regularly admitted students,
    • By the end of the first semester for transfer students.
  • Students who choose to take the Bowdoin course that is equivalent to the AP/IB exam (noted “Equivalent Course” in the following charts) will forfeit the related AP/IB credit.
    • AP/IB credit will not meet a distribution or division requirement, even if the Bowdoin course equivalent does.  
  • Students may apply a maximum of four course credits toward their Bowdoin degree from the following sources:
    • Advanced Placement Program,
    • International Baccalaureate Program,
    • other approved International exams,
    • and college credits earned from other institutions prior to matriculation.
