To Members of the College Community,

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the death of Janet Ridley, who for over nine years served the College as mail clerk in Campus Services. Janet, 58, passed away Friday after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

From her very first day on the job, Janet loved working at Bowdoin. Known across campus as a friendly, enthusiastic and hard working team player, she was always willing to go the extra mile to be of assistance to every member of the campus community.

A breath of fresh air behind the mail counter, she never failed to approach her job and her customers with an upbeat cheerfulness. Whether she was called upon to track down a missing parcel, or get mail orders out the door in record time, no task was too small, big or inconvenient. She was a model of a thorough and efficient work ethic.

In recognition of her service and dedication with a smile, Janet was the recipient of the inaugural Polar Star Excellence Award for Customer Service in June 2003.

Visiting hours will be Monday, March 1, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Crosman Funeral Home, 40 Main Street, Lisbon Falls, Maine.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 2 at 10 a.m. at the Crosman Funeral Home.

Bowdoin's Copy Center, Mail Center, and Bookstore (both the main store and the annex) will close Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. to allow Janet's many friends and co-workers to attend the service. These departments will reopen after the service, at approximately noon.

I know that each of you joins me in extending Bowdoin's condolences to Janet's husband Richard and her family, and our appreciation for Janet's many years of service to the College.
