Logging out of Polaris
Login to Polaris using your Bowdoin username and password. Polaris can be accessed anywhere you have an Internet connection.
After logging into Polaris, you will be brought to the main Faculty portal, which is displayed as a tab in the top header section underneath the word “Polaris.”
Your schedule can be viewed in the top right section of the portal, under “My Classes”. Note that Thursday is denoted as “R” rather than “Th” in Polaris. The “Reserved” columns shows if any spaces in your class are reserved for first year students.
In the second section on the right under “My Class Lists”, select the Term and Course you are interested in viewing, to obtain a class list. Currently Polaris only displays class lists for Fall 2013; however, in future semesters, you will be able to view all class lists since Fall 2013.
To email your entire class double click on “Email Class.” To email an individual student, double click on his/her name. The Polaris Team is working on an export option for those who want to import their class list into Excel. If you need to export a class list to Excel, you can do so in Blackboard. Once in your course, within Blackboard's "Control Panel" and click on "Grade Center" then "Full Grade Center." On the right go to "Work Offline" and select "Download." Choose "User Information Only" from the "Data" section and click on "Submit" to download the file.
To send a Comment Card to a student in your class click on the yellow notecard icon next to the student’s name. Type the comment you wish to send to the student in the body of the email, above the explanatory text. Please do not change to whom the card is addressed. If the icon does not respond, please contact the Help Desk at x3030 to set up Outlook, Thunderbird or Apple Mail to work with Comment Cards. For more information visit the Comment Cards page.

To print your class list, double click the “Print Class List” on the upper right of the portlet. A printer friendly view will appear and be ready to print from your web browser. The Polaris Team is currently working on an export to Excel option.
On the top left of the portal are a list of links to relevant Bowdoin websites for your convenience.
All faculty within a department (including lab instructors and post-doctoral fellows) have access to view and contact the students taking any class being offered by the department in the current term.
To use this feature begin by selecting the "Dept" tab (an abbreviation of Department) on the top left of the screen.
Once you are in the Department tab Polaris will display one of your own class lists by default.To view another class list within your department simply select the Course Number from the drop down menu.
To look up individual students, select the “Student Lookup” portal tab beneath the word “Polaris.” You will see a search box in which you can type a student’s ID or his/her first or last name. Note: You can type in all or part of the first or last name but not both, e.g., "John" or "Smith" but not "John Smith." Press return after typing in the search box, and the system will find students that match your criteria. From the results list, click on the student to view his/her details.
Alternately, you can select from the pull-down menu to the right of “Search” to see a list of your advisees, majors, or minors. From that list you can click on a student’s name to view their information. If you need to look up a student who has already graduated or resigned from the college, choose “All Students” from the bottom of the menu.
Then either click on the name of the student from the list or, if a long list is displayed, type in part of the student's name to locate them from within the list.
Once you’ve selected a particular student, a new page for that student will display. The top left section shows the “Personal Profile” of the student. The “Contact Info” tab includes SU Box, campus address and cell phone.
Directly below the “Personal Profile” section is the student’s “Academic Profile” where a variety of academic information is displayed. “Degree Requirements” shows which catalog year the student matriculated, and thus, which requirements they must meet. Additionally, you can view a student’s placement recommendations under the “Placements” tab; SAT, AP, QR, IL and Plag scores in the “Test Scores” tab; and a variety of Holds that might have been placed on the student to stop them from registering or acquiring an official transcript before they have completed a required task. A summary of a student’s current courses can be found in the top right section of the student page, under “Courses”, as well as information about whether they have elected credit/D/F or are taking the course for a standard letter grade. The division and distribution requirements that the course meets are noted on the column on the far right. Note that Thursday is denoted as “R” rather than “Th” in Polaris.
View the student’s Academic Contacts section for current instructor contact information, advisors, and student deans.
View a student's grades from the most recent semester in the Grades portlet. Next to the right column heading "Grade" a link will enable toggling between showing or hiding grades.
The Status portlet will display advisee's status by semester. Click on "Show All" on the upper right to display an advisee’s status. If an advisee is studying abroad, this section will show the program where they are.
Login to Polaris. Click on the "Enter Grades" tab. On the "Enter Grades" portal courses where you are listed as the instructor will be listed under the course dropdown menu. Choose one of your courses from the dropdown menu. Next to each student choose a grade from the grades drop-down list. Click the "Submit" button to save the grade entries you've made. You can change grades you have submitted until the grading deadline. After the deadline, all grades will be officially recorded on students' transcripts. To search for Bowdoin courses, click the "Class Finder" portal tab under the word "Polaris" on the top of the page. The Class Finder Guide provides more information.
Email lists for all active students (on and off campus) with a particular major or minor are available here (login is required). The lists are updated daily, so as students make changes to their majors or minors, they are added or dropped from the lists as appropriate. When emailing a list, please use the abbreviation given in the major or minor column (for example, afrs_maj or afrs_min) and add "@bowdoin.edu".
To log out, select the chevron to the right of your name in the header and choose “Sign Out.”
