Rebecca Perry '07

Physics major Rebecca Perry '07 Physics major Rebecca Perry '07 was selected by the Society of Physics Students to attend and report on an international conference of The Society of Rheology on Oct. 10, 2006. Rebecca is one of an increasing number of Bowdoin students who attend professional conferences each year - from fields as diverse as neuroscience, Asian studies, and environmental science.

Her account of the conference, which was held in nearby Portland, Me., gives an up-close view of the field of rheology - the science of the deformation and flow of matter.

During the summer of 2006, Perry participated in summer research in rheology at Indiana University, studying foam flow. Other material subjects in the field include polymers, metals, petroleum products, paint, and cosmetics.

"I came away from the conference surprised by the range of disciplines from which one can address questions in the field of rheology and impressed by the cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural nature of the forum that the conference provided," wrote Perry.
