Ginger Bear Cookie Decorating with Faculty & Staff Families

Story posted February 04, 2011

December 12th, 2010 the Bowdoin Outing Club invited Faculty and Staff families to decorate ginger bread cookies shaped like polar bears.

The event actually began earlier in the week when Assistant Director Devin undertook the difficult job of finding the best ginger bread cookie recipe.  While both the recipes from Director Mike Woodruff’s mother and Assistant Director Becca’s grandmother came out quite tasty, the award for best tasting ginger bread recipe goes to Women’s Soccer Coach Maren Rojas!  BOC officers, members and leaders helped roll out, cut and bake batch after batch of ‘ginger bears’.

We got the fireplace roaring and when the families showed up they were met with a pile of ginger bears, a spread of colored frosting, sugar, m&m’s, chocolate kisses, more sugar and craisins (that makes it healthy right mom?)  The cookies created were spectacular!  Some were completely covered with chocolate and others had tie-die designs with every single frosting and sugar color.  One important quality they all had in common was the high ratio of sugar toppings to cookie!  Before too long the sugar buzz kicked in and we had every ball in the BOC’s collection out and everyone running around in games of soccer, football and monkey-in-the-middle!

The BOC staff would like to thank everyone for coming and keeping us entertained all afternoon!  Check out the photo slideshow below for a look at some of the designs and their decorators.  (If you have photos you’d like to share, we'd love to have them to add to the slideshow!  Email raustin@bowdoin.edu for details.)
