The Bowdoin Organic Garden has a unique relationship with Crystal Spring Farm and the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust. The Land Trust owns Crystal Spring Farm outright (a unique accomplishment alone for a land trust), comprising 322 acres, and in turn leases the arable portion to Seth Kroeck who runs the 200+ member Crystal Spring Community Farm CSA. As part of an ongoing agreement begun in 2004, the Bowdoin Organic Garden uses roughly ¾ acres and provides 4-8 hours of labor each week during the growing season. As a crucial benefit, Seth spreads composts and discs our biggest fields for us in the spring, donates some of his greenhouse space for starting seeds, and provides valuable advice. It truly is a symbiotic relationship, and a unique one that we hope will continue to grow and be replicated by other schools or farms.
