Views from Away

The Views from Away Photo Competition is held every year. Three images taken by students who studied away in the previous year are chosen as prizewinners. You can see all the entries below, preceded by the names of the winners. Click on a thumbnail image for a larger version.

Views from Away, 2006-07

Correfoc festival, Barcelona. This is a long procession/parade of fire crackers, flames, and people dressed as devils, held during the La Merce weekend. At the Camp Nou soccer stadium for FC Barcelona. I am with my roommate from the program and we are wearing signature jerseys. Artist hidden behind paintings. Taken on our orientation trip to Collioure, a small French port just over the Spanish border.

Oyster beds at L'Herbe village in Aquitaine, France (outside Bordeaux. My host family from Bordeaux brought me to L'Herbe to sample the best oysters in France. Springtime in Provence, France; I drove past this field of planted mustard and typical Provencal village during a week of travel with friends in Southern France. Looking up at the central spire of the Rouen Cathedral, Rouen, France. My Parisian program took a day-trip to Rouen to see the world-famous cathedral.

We were on a 3-day train trip across the empty red center of Australia. One morning the train stopped next to a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. A white "ute" was parked next to the tracks. An Aboriginal woman stepped off the train, got into the "ute", and drove off into the desert. Phil falling. Phil Friedrich, our ISLE assistant, about to tumble down the face of Pidurangala, in the north near Sigiriya Rock. He isn't actually going to fall but I couldn't resist the coolness of the shot. Podimaama. This is the breakfast table with my podimaama (younger uncle in Sinhala) overlooking our front yard. We are in the middle of my favorite breakfast, kiriappa, milk pancakes with palm honey and ginger. Neighborhood. This is a footbridge in our neighborhood that my host father and I walked to on a regular basis. I just like how green everything is and how the bridge reminds me of Indiana Jones.

All over Israel people celebrate that their country, against all odds, has survived - and prospered - for 59 years Old City of Acre. At the Old City of Acre, a fisherman ties a lure on his line as a little boy looks on. Tourists mingle at the port in the background as two kids play in the water. Friends. A cow and a bird stand next to each other near rows of crops on Moshav Gan Ner, about five miles southeast of Afula, Israel.

Nighttime Melbourne Sustainable smoothies. I enjoyed a bike-powered smoothie at Melbourne's Sustainable Living Festival, which raises awareness of the importance of environmental protection. Two Apostles. At the end of the semester, my program director took my group to the Twelve Apostles rock formation on the Great Ocean Road.

Resting Koala. In the tall trees lining the road in Southern Victoria, many koalas rested. This one really smiled for me. Melbourne Docklands. Melbourne's harbor is not nearly as glamorous as Sydney's with the Bridge and Opera House, but it offers a beautiful sunset after a meal at the Docklands. Grace, the Ferocious Ninja Cat. Grace, my homestay sister, all dressed up for Halloween. Sometimes, it's just fun to wear a ninja outfit and paint whiskers on your face.

Zebra in Serengeti National Park Maasai Elder Camels in the Shadow of Oldonyo Lengai. Oldonyo Lengai is an active volcano that means "The House of God" in kimaa. It is currently erupting.

The crazy highlander coo was just as amiable to visitors as the rest of Scotland was. Typical of Scotland, sea fog descending upon the fishing village of Anstruther along the Firth of Forth coast, creating a mystical quality to the quaint harbour. Further north, the beginning of a magical hike along the coast of the Isle of Skye in the Cuillin Mountains.

Tian Tan Buddha, located on Lantau Island, is the largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statue in the world. This is one of the many lanterns on display during the Lantern Festival that took place on January 15th of the lunar calendar. This is part of campus. The Chinese gazebo is where people can rest at and enjoy the scenery. This portrays a traditional garden dating back to the dynasty eras.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. As the sky quickly grew dark, from the hiking trails of Tiger Leaping Gorge we could see the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. I took this picture in the early morning as we were travelling from Kunming to Zhongdian (claimed to be the real Shangri-La). The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China

The Bot is a favorite pub of students at Queen's University - there must have been a rugby game on that night, judging from the lines! The Duke of York. I was lucky enough to play lots of traditional Irish music with wonderful local musicians while I was in Belfast. My history/politics class went to Stormont, the Northern Irish Parliament, days before the devolution announcement; it was possible that Stormont would be shut down shortly.

Skansen at Djurgården in Stockholm. Swedish horse and old house at the world’s first open-air museum. Finnhamn. The island was deserted during orientation in January. But in the summer, Stockholmers flock to the archipelago to enjoy allemansrätten, the right of public access. Under the fountain at Sergels torg. Stockholm is a city of modern Scandinavian design and baby prams.

A Center of Bicycle Culture. When crossing the streets, it was bikes you had to be cautious of, not cars! Frederiksborg Palace. Built as a royal residence for King Christian IV, it is now the Museum of National History. Just ten minutes away from my house. Freetown Christiana. A semi-legal community, completely independent of Danish government and the cause of much political and social debate.

Santiaguinos celebrate international workers day in Chile's capital. I was able to convince security guards to allow me on to the press platform to take photographs. Eight-year old Christopher, a student at the rural school where I did my independent study, stands in the trash heap that the school is turning into an herbal medicine garden to teach the children about the healing powers of plants. My Mapuche host sister makes Zopapilla, a fried dough eaten in the winter.
