Ann Kibbie, associate professor of English at Bowdoin, will speak at the first Common Hour of the 2011–2012 academic year at 12:30 p.m., Friday, September 9, 2011, in Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center.

Professor Kibbie will give a talk titled "On the Brink of the Grave: Stories of Transfusion."

This Common Hour talk is the Karofsky Faculty Encore Lecture. Each semester the Faculty Encore Lecture features a Bowdoin faculty member chosen by members of the senior class honoring him or her as a teacher and role model.

Ann Kibbie earned her bachelor of arts degree at Boston University and her doctorate at the University of California–Berkeley. Her area of specialization is Restoration and 18th-century literature. She also teaches courses on the poetry and prose of John Milton, the Gothic novel, and Jane Austen.

She has published essays on Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders and Roxana, on Samuel Richardson's Pamela and Clarissa, and on the 18th-century object narrative.

Her current project, which is the basis for her lecture, is On the Brink of the Grave: Transfusion in Literature and Medicine from the Late Seventeenth Century to the End of the Victorian Era.

Common Hour is open to all Bowdoin students, faculty and staff. Events are held every other Friday of the term at 12:30 p.m. Class and meeting schedules are altered so that students, faculty, and staff may attend.

The Karofsky Family Fund was established by Paul I. '66, his son David M. '93, and his brother Peter '62 in memory of their father and David's grandfather, Sydney B. Karofsky.
