National Poetry Month: Gabrielle Calvocoressi To Read Apr. 7

In celebration of National Poetry Month, poet Gabrielle Calvocoressi will give a reading on Thursday, April 7, 2011, 7:30 p.m., in Main Lounge, Moulton Union, on the Bowdoin College campus. The event is open to the public free of charge. (The reading will also be webcast live.

Calvocoressi's visit is sponsored by From the Fishouse, an online audio archive of emerging poets, in conjunction with Quinby House and with support from the Barbara B. and Donald R. Kurtz Residential Life Fund and The Bowdoin College Alpha Delta Phi Society Literary Fund.

Gabrielle Calvocoressi's first collection of verse, The Last Time I Saw Amelia Earhart, was shortlisted for the Northern California Book Award and won the 2006 Connecticut Book Award. Her second collection, Apocalyptic Swing, was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award in 2009.

She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including a Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University, a Rona Jaffe Woman Writer's Award and a fellowship to Civitella di Ranieri in Umbria.

Apocalyptic Swing (Persea, 2009), Gabrielle Calvocoressi's second collection, was a finalist for the 2009 Los Angeles Times Book Award.

Her poetry has appeared in The New England Review, The Paris Review, and The Washington Post, among other journals. Garrison Keillor read her poem "Jubilee" on the October 5, 2009, edition of The Writer's Almanac.

She has been a visiting professor of poetry at UCLA, Benington College, and UC–Irvine, and was appointed as a Jones Lecturer in Poetry at Stanford University from 2002 to 2005.

Calvocoressi also writes the Sports Desk column for The Best American Poetry blog and is the Virtual Editor for Broadsided Press, a project that pairs visual artists and poets to create public poetry broadsides.

She lives in Los Angeles and currently teaches in the MFA program at California College of Arts in San Francisco and in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Warren Wilson College.
