The Department of Theater and Dance will present Openings, the 38th annual Spring Dance Performance, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 23, 24, and 25, 2009, at 8 p.m. in Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall.
The performance is free and open to the public. General admission tickets are available at the David Saul Smith Union information desk (207-725-3375) and at the door.
This year's performance is a single hour-long dance titled Openings, performed by students in repertory classes under the direction of theater and dance department faculty Gwyneth Jones and Paul Sarvis.
Openings is an exploration and disruption of the traditional proscenium theater space—a meditation on the visual frame—and an invitation for the audience to experience both the space and the dance in new ways. The dance is performed to music ranging from small jazz ensemble to new string quartet—from Motown to the Beatles—and features a stage set by nationally recognized designer Victor Becker.
Openings is produced with assistance from the Alice Cooper Morse Fund for the Performing Arts.
A public reception will be held in Drake Lobby on Saturday, April 25, after the performance.
