Ambassador Thomas Pickering '53 to Discuss Foreign/Security Policy Sept. 16

Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering, Class of 1953, will discuss foreign and security policy in light of the upcoming presidential election at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008, in Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center.

Amb. Pickering’s talk, titled "Priorities for the Next President of the United States in Foreign and Security Policy," is open to the public and admission is free. For more information call 725-3433.

Thomas R. Pickering '53 has had a distinguished career as a statesman and diplomat. He holds the personal rank of career ambassador, the highest in the U.S. Foreign Service. In a diplomatic career spanning five decades, he has served as U.S. ambassador to the Russian Federation, India, Israel, El Salvador, Nigeria, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He served as U.S. ambassador and representative to the United Nations in New York from 1989 to 1992, a period that saw an international coalition move effectively against Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait. He also served as U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs from 1997 to 2001.

Amb. Pickering twice won the Distinguished Presidential Award and also received the Department of State's highest award, the Distinguished Service Award. He is a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies and the Council on Foreign Relations. He served as executive secretary of the Department of State and special assistant to secretaries William P. Rogers and Henry A. Kissinger from 1973 to 1974.

Amb. Pickering is currently vice chairman at Hills and Company, having served as senior vice president, international relations, of The Boeing Company from 2001 to 2006. In 2005, he was awarded the Bowdoin Prize, the highest honor that the College bestows upon one of its members.
