Joy Kogawa was born in Vancouver in 1935. Like other Japanese-Canadians, she and her family were evacuated from their home during World War II and interned in the interior of British Columbia.
Her novel, Obasan, winner of the 1981 Books in Canada's First Novel Award, explores the continued emotional and cultural resonance of this wartime trauma.
Joy Kogawa's Bowdoin visit is sponsored by the Asian Studies Program.
