Arctic Museum's 'Exploring the World Around Bowdoin' May 3

Story posted May 01, 2008

The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum will sponsor its annual Family Day Saturday, May 3, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Hubbard Hall.

"Exploring the World Around Bowdoin College" focuses on activities related to the Arctic Museum's new exhibit, Northward Over the Great Ice: Robert E. Peary and the Quest for the North Pole. The exhibit centers on Peary's expeditions to reach the North Pole and features the Arctic Museum's rich collection of objects, photographs and films. Highlights of the exhibit include Inuit objects used by Peary's team, the American flag that flew at the North Pole, a 14 foot-long sledge, film clips and sound tracks of various expedition members.

During Family Day, the Bowdoin College Outing Club will conduct an activity where children can learn to use a compass and explore the Bowdoin College campus. Children taking part in this activity must be accompanied by an adult and must be in second grade and up. The Outing Club will provide the compasses.

Other activities are geared for children of all ages. Peary sported a large mustache, and his wife Josephine wore fancy hats. Children will be able to make Peary mustaches and Josephine hats. They will be able to use a magnifying glass to identify Arctic objects, and explore the floors of Hubbard Hall for fossils. Part of Northward Over the Great Ice includes a display of paper dolls made by Inughuit children. Families taking part in "Exploring the World of Bowdoin College" will color and cut out paper dolls like those made by Inughuit children, or make their own.

Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 2 to 5 p.m., closed Mondays and national holidays. Admission is free.
