The work of Zachary Montgomery, a 21-year-old Maine artist, will be featured in Lamarche Gallery, David Saul Smith Union, beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, February 1, 2008. The show, titled "Adaptive Measures," will run though Friday, February 29, 2008.
Montgomery's work reflects his keen interest in nature and environmentalism. He claims that we as humans assume that we can adapt technologically to whatever harm we do to the world. His work not only addresses this assumption but directly challenges it.
The show's title also refers to the creative process of crafting the work itself. "I don't begin a piece with any sort of concrete idea, but adapt to whatever random marks I lay down initially. Eventually, everything I do turns into something, often something that has been slogging around in my sub-conscience for a while."
Although he prefers printmaking or graphic pens over acrylics, he also works in a variety of other mediums including photography. His work can be seen on his Web site http://codshanks.deviantart.com.
The art show is open to the public and admission is free. For more information call 725-3375.
