Flexible Music will perform May 5.

Flexible Music, whose music blends the coordination and complexity of contemporary classical music with the dynamism and rhythmic vitality of jazz and rock, will perform at Bowdoin College at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2006, in the Tillotson Room, Gibson Hall.

Because of its unique instrumentation -- guitar, saxophone, piano, and percussion -- Flexible Music is carving out its own repertoire, working with composers to commission and premiere new works.

The quartet's Bowdoin program will include Assistant Professor of Music Vineet Shende's tongue-in-cheek homage to James Brown, "Throw Down or Shut Up." (Listen to a podcast of Shende discussing inspiration, his recent works, and today's classical music at the Podcasts at Bowdoin site.)

The concert is also scheduled to include Nico Muhly's "Flexible Music" (2002), Orianna Webb's "Sustenance Variations" (2004), Louis Andriessen's "Hout" (1991), and John Link's "Around the Bend" (2006).

Admission to the concert is free of charge and no tickets are required. For more information call the Bowdoin College Department of Music at 725-3747.

Flexible Music plays contemporary music that defies boundaries, combining vital rhythmic energy with compositional and structural integrity. The quartet has performed at the Julliard School, University of Pennsylvania, Manhattan School of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, and New York University.

Flexible Music was awarded a grant by the Meet the Composer Foundation for a collaboration with composer Adam Silverman, as well as funding support for part of a recording of premieres through the Mikhashoff Trust for New Music.

The members of the group are among New York's most active contemporary performers on their respective instruments, having appeared as soloists and chamber musicians both nationally and internationally.

Multi-percussionist Haruka Fujii has toured as a solo percussionist, marimbist, chamber musician, and hand drum player.

Pianist Eric Huebner has drawn world-wide acclaim for his performances of new and traditional music.

Guitarist Daniel Lippel has given recent recitals on the Guitars International Series, as well as for the New York Classical Guitar Society and Boston Classical Guitar Society.

Saxophonist Timothy Ruedeman's recent solo performances include Pisa D'estate festival in Italy. He is a founding member of the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet.
