Dick Pound, one of the most influential members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will speak at Common Hour at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006, in Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center.

Pound will present a "Recap on the Olympics."

Dick Pound was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada and was a swimming competitor at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Retiring from swimming, he accepted a role with the Canadian Olympic Committee and eventually became its president.

In 1978 he was elected to the International Olympic Committee and was put in charge of negotiating television and sponsorship deals. He became known as an outspoken critic of corruption and led the IOC's investigation of bribery charges that surrounded the Salt Lake City Games, an inquiry that resulted in 10 IOC members being expelled or resigning.

On a mission to clean up drug use in sports, Pound is the chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency. His efforts have made him one of the most renowned and influential leaders in sports and in business.

Pound has built the Olympics into a multi-billion dollar enterprise by branding and marketing the Olympic rings, and negotiating shrewd deals for television rights around the world. Under Pound's leadership, the IOC has grown into one of the richest sports organizations in the world.

TIME magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2005.

Common Hour is open to all Bowdoin students, faculty and staff.
