The Bowdoin Afro-Latin Music Ensemble was established in 2000 to provide opportunities for students to perform music outside the Western art tradition. Its repertoire has included music for African mbira and drumming ensembles; Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Jamaican music; and music of the Middle East. Directors and guest artists have included Joanna Bosse, Michael Wingfield, Robert Greenlee, Daniel Sharp, Jordan Benissan, and Abraham Adzenyah.
The Ensemble is a non-auditioned group of students with varying backgrounds, including some with no prior music experience. Music is usually learned without notation, and performances can vary from informal concerts to processions at College events.
This year's ensemble will be led by Prof. Michael Birenbaum Quintero
and will focus on the traditional music of Colombia.
The usually meets on Wednesdays, 6:30 to 9:30 PM in Gibson 10.
